Meet the Trustees

Guardian, Teacher, Changemaker, Advocate and Friend.

The Trustees acknowledge the voice of the many environmental and hunting groups in Aotearoa and want to strengthen the entire sector through collaboration and coordination.

Our Trust will promote and represent hunters in a positive connective role by working with various government agencies and hunting interest groups. For example, we will work with the Game Animal Council (GAC) to further entrench its authority as the eminent statutory advisor to the Minister and government on all matters concerning game animals.

The Trust’s long-term goal is to secure robust financial support from the public, particularly philanthropists focused on conserving the environment and its associated ecosystems.

In short, we promote guardianship of New Zealand’s great outdoors so that everyone (two legs and four) can live well (and play well) with a deep respect for one another.

  • Richard Burdon

    Richard Burdon

Chairman and trustee of Hunters for Conservation / Owner Operator Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing

Sarah, my wife and I run Glen Dene Hunting & Fishing at Lake Hawea in Otago and have achieved Gold QualMark status. We have worked hard over the years to ensure our agritourism business operates under key regenerative tourism principles adopted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council and the wider Community.

We have always been strong supporters of ecotourism, the environment and conservation. Currently, Guardian of Lake Hawea is our family’s commitment to the environmental welfare of the community where we live and work. Recently, I became one of three international directors of the Dallas Safari Board representing the Pacific Region and the New Zealand Professional Hunting Guides executive.

I’ve enjoyed the outdoors all of my life. I’m a trekker, gardener and food grower. I was raised in a remote farming region where the family was fed from the land and hunting was in the mix. Moving to urban living as a teen, I’ve straddled these two lifestyles and observed the different lenses constantly.

I work as an in-house lawyer and have held a number of community governance roles. A strong believer in strengthening the understanding of our environment and wildlife. The role of hunters in the delicate balance of ecosytems is often not well understood and polarising. It's so important for our future generations that there's a strong connected voice.

Raised a family, advocated in the health and education sectors and worked as an in-house corporate lawyer. I strongly believe in strengthening the understanding of our wildlife and environment, the role of hunting, and ensuring there’s a strong, connected voice for the two in New Zealand.

Strategic Agribusiness, Agritech, Agri-food Advisor / Author /Angler

I am passionate about conserving and protecting New Zealand’s great outdoors for all, from trampers to hunters, farmers to ecologists. Every chance I get I am out in New Zealand’s great outdoors. This country has some of the best hunting and fishing on our doorsteps from The Three Kings to Stewart Island.

In the mid to late 70s I owned a small dairy farm in Eastern Bay of Plenty and then a Beef and Sheep property. In the Manawahe hills towards the Rotorua Lakes District, and I’m involved in commercial technology that will help farmers and am a published Author of best-seller: Our Land Our People.

I believe it is vital for the preservation of our wonderful natural environment and for the future of hunting New Zealand that our many hunters must contribute strongly to conservation. This will enable hunters to have a positive relationship with the Government and our society.

I’m sure HFC can play a leading role in achieving these things for the benefit of our many and diverse hunting groups.

  • Andy Tanock

    Andy Tanock

Founder of Hunting & Fishing New Zealand

I’m onboard with Hunters for Conservation because I believe in the eyes of the public, hunters must earn the right to wander the hills and wetlands with rifle or shotgun in hand. The strategy to raise significant funds to finance major projects the many established and accomplished hunting and fishing groups, associations and clubs can apply for makes sense.

The way to earn this right is to better publicise the conservation and community projects we are currently involved with and those we can undertake. While I love to keep the freezer stocked with venison, my main contribution will be balancing the Trust Board by representing the interests of game bird hunters and the habitat projects that benefit wetland and upland species.

    Dame Lynda Topp

Entertainer / Activist / Fly Fisher

I have spent over 40 years travelling around New Zealand as an entertainer, and I’ve seen a lot of rivers and country in that time. There is nothing more relaxing and exciting than walking up a pristine high-country river looking for the many world-class trout that call these rivers home, and as an angler I feel obligated to make sure that the next generation gets to fish in our pristine rivers, or hunt in bush that will be healthy and here for the next few thousand years.

I believe the Hunters For Conservation Trust will be a leading light in this movement to motivate, educate and enable hunters and anglers also to lead the way in conservation projects, managing game species, keeping the environment predator-free, keeping our native plants, animals and birds safe and their habitat in good condition.

I am a registered Forestry consultant with over 45 years of experience in the sector and a Biosecurity consultant with a proven track record focusing on eradication programmes. Future generations will be the ones to judge whether we have achieved that goal, and we must act now to do so.

Hunters for Conservation Trust will coordinate a diverse range of interests in the hunting community to protect and enhance our great outdoors, which is the core of our interest in being out there. We need to act now to protect all we value, and bring others along on this journey with us.

  • Cam McKay

    Cam McKay

Founding member of Points South / Alpine Hunting Guide / Hunting Apparel

I have been involved in establishing The Hunters for Conservation Trust since its inception and have been a keen recreational hunter and fisherman for as long as I can remember. I have spent the last 20 years guiding clients in the backcountry including backcountry skiing, guiding hunts, and now have a successful business importing and retailing hunting apparel. As a result, I have a good understanding of the need to balance both recreational and commercial interests.

My reasons for being involved are an interest in advocating for and enhancing our recreational hunting opportunities, and protecting the natural environment that we need to flourish for those hunting opportunities to prosper. I have worked across many sectors of our hunting and outdoors industry, from commercial guiding to WARO, retail, distribution, marketing, and brand management, and I have a broad view of the many pieces that make up our hunting and conservation landscape.

Our Trustees have identified several worthwhile funds. Visit our donate now page to explore the ways to give.

Hunters for Conservation Trust will collaborate with the hunting community to protect and enhance our great outdoors. We must act now to protect all we value and bring others along on this journey. Future generations will be the ones to judge whether we have achieved that goal. Let’s do it for them.
